Restaurant offers $25,000 dessert

New York, NY (AP)--This is one rich cup of haute chocolate: A New York eatery is offering a $25,000 dessert bulging with top-grade cocoa, edible gold and shavings of a luxury truffle.

The Frrrozen Haute Chocolate was declared the most expensive dessert in the world on Wednesday by Guinness World Records.

The dessert is a frozen, slushy mix of cocoas from 14 countries, milk and 5 grams of 24-carat gold topped with whip cream and shavings from a La Madeline au Truffle.

It is served in a goblet with a band of gold decorated with 1 carat of diamonds and served with a golden spoon diners can take home.

The dessert was created by Serendipity 3, a restaurant popular with tourists and once featured in a John Cusack movie.

MySpace Hacked!!!!!

Visiting Alicia Keys' Page And Others exposes the visitor to an exploit that installs malware unless the user is fully patched against the most recent security vulnerabilities.

By Thomas Claburn

Avoid Alicia Keys' Web page on MySpace. It's been hacked.

Roger Thompson, CTO at Exploit Prevention Labs, has found multiple hacked MySpace pages, including the page for Alicia Keys, the social networking site's fourth most popular music artist.

In keeping with what appears to be a new trend among security researchers, Thompson has released a video depicting the hack on YouTube. He has also posted details on his blog.

Visiting the page exposes the visitor to an exploit that installs malware unless the user is fully patched against the most recent security vulnerabilities. "They're using an exploit to install software in the background," Thompson explains in the video.

Even those with patched systems are vulnerable. The hackers have found a way to associate their malicious URL with what would normally be a non-clickable background area on the Web page. The result is that clicks outside specific clickable controls get captured and interpreted as a click on the malicious URL.

"If you click anywhere outside a given control, [the malicious URL] will be the default control that it goes to," Thompson explains. "It's a really interesting technique and it's going to catch a lot of people."

"What's not clear at this point is how they're doing it, and how widespread it is," Thompson says on his blog. "Neither Google (NSDQ: GOOG) nor MySpace seems to be indexing the critical bit of HTML. If you search for the exploit site (co8vd.cn), the only results seem to be victims, or people talking about victims."

In a conversation via instant message, Thompson said that social networking sites are increasingly become vectors of attack. "The whole point of browser stuff is that it bypasses the firewall," he explained.

A spokesperson for MySpace was not immediately available to comment on the attack.

Jay-Z Rehearsing for Tour

WTF!!!!! is going on in America today ...

Like many middle-class, suburban American parents, Shannan and Joey Troiano worried about their son’s behaviour and his bad grades at high school. And like many wayward teenagers, Cory Ryder was grounded for weeks at a time, had a PlayStation confiscated and was banned from watching TV.

Less typically, this 16-year-old was plotting to murder his parents by hiring a hitman, while his mother was organising a sting operation involving a police officer posing as a contract killer. Police say that Cory offered the undercover officer his stepfather’s new pickup truck as payment for killing his parents. “Two bullets is all it takes,” he is alleged to have said.

Some teens smoke marijuana but not tobacco

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Teens using marijuana function better than those also using tobacco but have no more psycho-social problems than abstainers, a Swiss study suggested.

The study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, found 6 percent of the teens using marijuana alone were more likely to be male, play sports, live with both parents and have good grades.

Dr. J. C. Saris and colleagues at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, analyzed data on 5,263 students aged 16 to 20 years from a 2002 national survey. Of these, 455 smoked marijuana only, 1,703 smoked marijuana and tobacco and 3,105 abstained from both substances..

"The gateway theory hypothesizes that the use of legal drugs -- tobacco and alcohol -- is the previous step to cannabis consumption," the study authors said in a statement. "However, recent research also indicates that cannabis use may precede or be simultaneous to tobacco use and that, in fact, its use may reinforce cigarette smoking or lead to nicotine addiction independently of smoking status."

While teens smoking both marijuana and tobacco may have more psycho-social problems and be worthy targets for preventive intervention, the study authors advised, those who smoke marijuana only should also be monitored and counseled and their situation shouldn't be trivialized.

Heart Surgery Drug Pulled From Market

By GARDINER HARRIS
Published: November 6, 2007

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 — Pressured by regulators, the German pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG announced Monday that it had agreed to withdraw the controversial heart surgery drug Trasylol after a Canadian study suggested that it increased death rates.

Dr. John K. Jenkins, a leading official of the Food and Drug Administration, said, “F.D.A. could not identify a specific patient population where the benefits of using Trasylol could outweigh the risks.”

Because of concerns that supplies of alternative medicines could run short, the agency has asked for a phased withdrawal of the drug, which is given before heart surgery to reduce the risks of excessive bleeding.

Bayer said in a statement that it still believed Trasylol was beneficial when used as directed. The F.D.A. said it would try to accommodate doctors who still wanted to use the drug by allowing Bayer to provide it as part of a study.

About 200,000 patients around the world received Trasylol last year, 110,000 of them in the United States, Bayer said. The drug, known generically as aprotinin, has had F.D.A. approval since 1993.

Do Energy Drinks Jolt The Heart?

Researchers Say Popular Drinks Boost Blood Pressure, Heart Rate

WebMD) Energy drinks may boost your blood pressure and heart rate, as well as your vitality, researchers say.

In a small study, they found that drinking just two cans of a popular drink increased blood pressure and heart rate within four hours.

While the increases didn't reach dangerous levels in the healthy volunteers studied, they could be harmful for people with heart disease, or who are taking medication to control blood pressure, says James Kalus, senior manager of patient care services at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

"These people should avoid these drinks," he tells WebMD.

How about people at high risk of heart disease due to obesity, smoking, family history, or other factors?

"Pending more study, at least talk to your doctor about potential risks," Kalus says.

The findings were presented at the American Heart Association's (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2007.

Energy Drinks Raise Blood Pressure
In the study, 15 healthy young men and women drank two cans of an energy drink that contained 80 milligrams of caffeine every day for a week. All agreed to abstain from any other forms of caffeine for two days prior to and throughout the study.

Within four hours of consuming the drinks on the first day, systolic blood pressure (the top number) shot up by 9 points; on the seventh day, it rose 10 points. Diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) rose 5 points on both days, Kalus says.

Heart rate increased five beats per minute on the first day; seven days on the last.

12-mile march

I was a new Army basic trainee at Fort McClellan and one requirement was a demanding 12-mile march. We got started at 6 a.m. and were pumped up for the trek. An hour later, feeling the heavy load of our packs, we wondered if the end would ever come.

“Men,” our sergeant yelled, “You're doing a FINE job. We've already covered four miles!”

Revitalized, we picked up the pace.

“And,” continued Sarge, “we should reach the starting point any minute now.”

Google to Announce Mobile Platform on Monday

The ambitious mobile application development platform includes an OS, APIs, IM, and mobile browser.

Google negotiators this weekend continue to hammer out agreements with wireless carriers, handset makers, software developers, and hardware providers, as the company prepares to announce on Monday an ambitious platform for creating mobile applications.

Although Google has declined to comment for months on its rumored move into the mobile space, sources said the company will make an announcement Monday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, and that details of the plan are being finalized this weekend.
AppDev Tools, Partners Poised

Google will announce an open source development platform for mobile applications that will contain a full set of components, including an operating system, a set of common APIs, a middleware layer, a customizable user interface, and even a mobile browser, sources said. Instant messaging standard protocols will also be supported.

The platform is intended to simplify the process of creating and deploying mobile applications, so that an application can be built once and be compatible with multiple phones.

On the partner side, well over 30 industry heavyweights are already on board, including Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Nvidia, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, China Mobile, Telefonica, NTT DoCoMo, LG Electronics, and HTC, the sources said.

With negotiations expected to continue through the weekend and into Monday morning, it's possible that the list could exceed 40 partners. Among those not supporting the announcement at press time are Nokia, Verizon and Apple.
Challenging Microsoft, Symbian

The development platform will be freely available to anyone who wants to use it, and, aside from a common core, will provide a lot of flexibility for modifications and extensions.

The ultimate goal is to lower the costs and simplify the creation of mobile applications and spur innovation that, as Google sees it, has been hampered by technical fragmentation. As such, the Google offering will rival existing mobile platforms from Microsoft and Symbian.

For Google, the benefit will come indirectly from an acceleration in improvements to mobile phone interfaces, which the company reasons will make it easier for people to access online services, like search engines, and applications, from their mobile phones. The intent is to bridge the gap between the Internet and mobile phones.

As usage of Google online services increases on mobile devices, so will the advertising revenue the company generates.

Mobile advertising is a tiny market but is expected to grow quickly in coming years. According to Opus Research, mobile advertising spending in North America and Western Europe will reach a combined $5.08 billion y 2012, up from an estimated $106.8 million at the end of this year. This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 116 percent.

Opus Research, which released the forecast last week, said that improving the mobile user experience will drive ad revenue growth, which will prompt more people to spend more time using the Internet via their cell phones.
Focus on the Mobile

In addition to Google, all other major providers of online services, like AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft, are busy tweaking their Web sites and Web applications for use via mobile phones.

As the Google deal takes its final shape, it appears more and more likely that it might pit Google against its traditional ally Apple, and align it with carriers that have been hurt by the success of the iPhone.

Although the platform will be available to anyone, including Apple, it could indirectly accelerate the pace at which competing handsets catch up with the iPhone's user experience innovations.

A few weeks ago, Apple announced it will release a software development kit so that third-party developers can build applications for the iPhone. It expects to make it available in February.

If Apple is absent from the partner list in Monday's announcement, it could signal that Steve Jobs's company views the Google platform as a negative development in the mobile market, an interesting situation, considering Google's CEO Eric Schmidt sits on Apple's board.

The intensity of this weekend's negotiations is not surprising, but rather reflective of the bold undertaking Google has assumed in the notoriously complicated world of dealmaking in the wireless market.

As has been reported previously, the components of the Google platform will not be delivered until at least mid-2008. At some point, the effort might even yield a Google-branded phone, sources said.

Friendly Bears

On a military training exercise, the British divisional command radio operators were getting very bored one quiet night, when breaking the silence a voice asked over the air, “Are there any friendly bears listening?”

After a moment, another voice replied, “Yes, I'm a friendly bear,” and then another voice, “I'm a friendly bear too!”

At this point, the Officer at Headquarters grabbed his microphone and let loose a blistering tirade at the operators for fooling around on a radio link.

When he had finished, there was silence for about ten seconds. Then a small voice said, “You're not a very friendly bear, are you?”

Marriage Math

I just read that last year 4,153,237 people got married. I don't want to start any trouble, but shouldn't that be an even number?
