Ask Yahoo!:

Dear Yahoo!:
Why are so many movies filmed in Vancouver?
Megan
Los Angeles, California

Dear Megan:
A good number of movies and TV shows are indeed shot north of the border. And while it may seem odd for studios and networks to create their masterpieces so far from Hollywood, their reasoning is actually quite simple. Money.

Filmmakers can save a lot by working in Canada. This article from Slate.com explains that while Tinseltown has excellent soundstages and technicians for interior shots, filming outdoors in Los Angeles (or anywhere in the United States) gets very expensive very quickly. Up in Canada's smog-free air, things are a lot cheaper.

Canada has unionized labor, but it comes at a significant discount (up to 35% in the late 1990s). Additionally, the Canadian government subsidizes costs and offers a rebate on digital effects (if they're done in Canada and the filmmakers employ either a Canadian director, screenwriter, or highly paid star). Other discounts, rebates, and tax breaks apply.

Although your question specifically referenced Vancouver, the beautiful western city isn't the only Canadian destination to host Hollywood productions. Toronto frequently serves as a cheap alternative to filming in New York City, and "Calgary can often pass for the American West."

So, let's hear it for Canada, eh? Without their bargain prices, we'd all probably be paying $15 per movie ticket.

Try Windows Vista without installing it on your PC.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Try Windows Vista without installing it on your PC. A new Microsoft Virtual Labs site lets you test-drive the Business version of the OS, right inside your browser.

The site provides a self-guided tour of Vista, dividing all its features into categories like safe, efficient and connected. Within each category you can view a video or take a test-drive of various features. When you opt for the latter, you effectively get Vista running in a window. You can poke around, try the new apps (like Sidebar and Windows Meeting Space) and so on.

Two catches: First, the test drive requires Internet Explorer 6 or later. Second, on my system the virtual-machine Vista ran dog-slow, though your mileage may vary. Even if you don't plan to adopt Windows Vista when it ships later this month, chances are good you'll end up with it eventually. This is a neat way to get familiar with the look and feel of the new OS. — Rick Broida from LifeHacker.Com

Dear Yahoo!:

Dear Yahoo!:
Is it true that dentists have the highest suicide rate of any profession?
Luda
Ellington, Connecticut

Dear Luda:
Dentists spend their lives hunched over grumpy patients, all of whom would rather be somewhere (anywhere!) else. Is it any wonder we assume they have an abnormally high suicide rate?
The Straight Dope cites a researcher named Steven Stack who found that a dentist's odds of committing suicide are 6.64 times greater than the general population. According to another of the Straight Dope's sources, only pharmacists and chemists have higher suicide rates in the state of California.

But hold on -- not everyone agrees with these findings. Dr. Jerry Gordon states that the American Dental Association found "little evidence that dentists are more prone to stress-related suicides than the general population." Perhaps the depressed dentist is nothing more than an urban legend that, over time, became accepted as fact.

Nevertheless, suicide is still a very real problem that cuts across the boundaries of age, gender, race, and occupation. Over 30,000 Americans take their own lives every year. If you're worried about yourself or someone you know, please seek help immediately.

Weather Man Gets Knocked Down

Engagement off to violent start

YORK, Pa. (UPI) -- Hours after a Maryland man proposed to his girlfriend and got a "yes," he was charged with punching her and hitting her on the head with a steering wheel lock.

Pennsylvania state police said Stephen Mujerm, 40, popped the question at a New Year's party near York, Pa., to girlfriend Victorine Taboh, and all was well until the pair and another passenger set out for their homes in Maryland with Mujerm at the wheel. Police said both Taboh and the other passenger complained Mujerm was driving recklessly. He stopped the car and reportedly began arguing with his new fiancee at the roadside.

Taboh reportedly grabbed the steering wheel lock and smashed the windows of Mujerm's car. The passenger told authorities Mujerm punched Taboh before swinging the wheel lock at her head, which knocked her unconscious.

She was taken to York Hospital, treated and released with no serious injuries, the York Dispatch reported.

Mujerm was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangering and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

There was no indication of whether the engagement was still intact.

Bank robber arrested 20 years after heist

PARIS (UPI) -- Police in France arrested a bank robber who had spent 20 years on the run since the original heist.

The BBC said Miloud Hai, 48, was already sentenced to life in prison for his part in one of France's biggest bank robberies. Hai was part of an armed group that stole $17.6 million in a 1986 bank heist in the western France town of Saint-Nazaire.

But the robbery that led to his arrest in a Parisian suburb in April was much less lucrative, police said. During that crime, four men forced a real estate agent to open his safe and stole $19,800.

The BBC said police arrested Hai as he left an apartment where he'd been living under a false name. Hai had managed to elude authorities by moving and changing his identity frequently, the BBC said.

Man uses torch to thaw pipes, starts fire

BEL ALTON, Md. (UPI) -- A Bel Alton, Md., man scorched part of his home while trying to use a propane torch to thaw frozen pipes.

Charles Woodland tried to thaw a kerosene pipe with a propane torch after the heater in the house where he lives with his 81-year-old mother failed to work properly, the Washington Post reported.

While he was trying to free up the pipes, a fire started. While neither Woodland nor his mother was injured by the ensuing blaze, damage to the house and contents was assessed by investigators at $150,000.

The practice causes fires in homes all around the nation every winter and last month led to the death of a man in Wyoming man. Fairfax County (Va.) Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Dan Schmidt told the Post the department is called to put out a fire caused by the practice an average of once a year.

"The sensible thing is to call in a plumber," Schmidt said.

Passengers on two separate flights stung by stowaway arachnids
MSNBC News Services

Snakes on a plane? That is so 2006 ... try scorpions on a plane!

In two separate instances, airline passengers were stung by scorpions after returning home from vacations.

A scorpion stung David Sullivan on the back of his right leg, just below the knee, then crawled up and down his left leg, he thinks, before getting him again in the shin.

Not what he was expecting on his flight home from Chicago to Vermont.

Sullivan, a 46-year-old builder from Stowe, was aboard the United Airlines flight on the second leg of his trip home from San Francisco, where he and his wife Helena had been visiting their sons. He awoke from a nap shortly before landing and noticed something strange.

Now this was totally underhanded...

Story from tbt* news.

By Shane Graber
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Paul Kinsella lost his wallet 100 times on the dot, all in the pursuit of knowledge. Kinsella wanted to know whether folks could be trusted, whether they're honest, upright citzens.

He spend a month dropping wallets around Belleville, Ill. He then tracked whether the finders would return the wallet and its contents -- $2.10 and a fake $50 gift certificate in each -- to the rightfull owner.

And here's the good news: They did. Oh, how the did. By a 3-1 ratio, they did.

"They actually took the time to do it." said Kinsella, 35, a Website designer.

Of the 100 "lost" wallets, 74 were returned to Kinsella. Deborah Watson-Texier was one of the good ones. Actually, her son, Pratt Texier, 23, found the wallet outside a grocery store. But Watson-Texier, 56, mailed it back. She made sure the money was still in there. "That was $2.10 that belonged to someone else." she said.

Kinsella posted his findings on a website called www.wallettest.com. He has links to videos of the 100 people finding the wallets, and three telephone conversations. The identities of the people in the video and sound clips are obsured. He got premission to record the telephone calls, he said.

Filming people in public areas is legal, said Robert L. Siciliano, CEO of www.IDTheftSecurity.com, and a national expert on privacy issues. In fact, he said, people should practically expect it.
"Anyone who elects to participate in society can't expect to have any privacy -- plain and simple," he said. "Privacy is an illusion. It's been gone for quite some time. From the moment the doctor slaps you, you're being recorded."

Kinsella admittedly had fun at the expense of some of the few people who didn't return the wallet. When one person calls and tries to redeem the fake $50 gift certificate, Kinsella tells the caller that he/see must answer a series of questions. After several minutes of meaningless questions, Kinsella evens gets one caller to admit personally sexual details. The caller is willing to endure all of this, in hopes, of making an easy $50.

Dear Yahoo!:

Dear Yahoo!:
How can I tell if someone's lying to me?
Shaka
Chicago, Illinois

Dear Shaka:
With the exception of politicians ("no new taxes") and unscrupulous mechanics ("You need a new transmission"), most folks don't enjoy lying. Yet it's pretty hard to not fib every once in a while.
Thankfully for the poor saps being lied to, visual cues are often easy to spot. According to eHow, avoiding eye contact is one of the most common physical giveaways of someone telling you a whopper. Other tip-offs include the person placing his or her hand over their mouth, touching their nose, scratching their ear or neck, or abruptly changing their pattern of speech.

A "good liar" can mask these impulses, but some behavior can't be so easily controlled. Dilated pupils, sweating, and excessive swallowing are all indicators that something's fishy in the state of Denmark.

As far as we know, there are only two ways to be absolutely sure somebody's lying -- either they break down and confess or their pants catch fire. Unfortunately, both rarely happen, so listen to your gut and keep an eye out for a sweaty brow.
