Bank robber arrested 20 years after heist

PARIS (UPI) -- Police in France arrested a bank robber who had spent 20 years on the run since the original heist.

The BBC said Miloud Hai, 48, was already sentenced to life in prison for his part in one of France's biggest bank robberies. Hai was part of an armed group that stole $17.6 million in a 1986 bank heist in the western France town of Saint-Nazaire.

But the robbery that led to his arrest in a Parisian suburb in April was much less lucrative, police said. During that crime, four men forced a real estate agent to open his safe and stole $19,800.

The BBC said police arrested Hai as he left an apartment where he'd been living under a false name. Hai had managed to elude authorities by moving and changing his identity frequently, the BBC said.
